Justine (R) brings a baby home from the front and presents her to Arabella (L). Of the baby, all Justine will say is that “it’s the General’s baby.”
Justine is serving in the Union Army, disguised as a man.
Arabella, wrapped up in the baby, doesn’t realize at first that Justine is mortally wounded.
Brother Charles Freeman looks on in anguish, knowing that he can never tell Arabella that he is the father of the baby. It is his promise to Justine and the General.
